This Storage Intelligence (StorInt™) dispatch covers Microsoft Exchange 2010 and Exchange 2013/2016 Solution Review Program (ESRP) results. Since we last reviewed this 1000 and under mailbox category nine months ago, there have been only 1 new submissions from InforTrend, the EonStor DS 1016R. A few of our top 10 charts have changed. We select 2 of these to show below.
Latest ESRP V3.0 & 4.0 (E2010&E2013) performance
In Figure 1 we show our Exchange database transfers per second chart.
In Figure 1 one can see the InforTrend EonStor DS 1016R came in at number four (#4) in our top ten. The DS 1016R was FC attached storage system with 32GB of DRAM (16GB/controller) and used 8-3TB 7200RPM disk drives. Most systems in our top 10 database xfers/sec use 10Krpm drives but there are at least three others (HPE MSA and the other InforTrend systems).
The other thing that stood out for this InforTrend submission was that it used ~80% of its disk capacity for Exchange Database and log storage. Most of the other submissions used 18% or 36%, with the next highest being 72% (HPE P2000 G3 MSA). Median % used was 36% for this top ten. So it didn’t take advantage of any extra space to stripe database and log data across more disks. Then again with 8 disks there weren’t a lot to go around.
We prefer to show normalized database transfers but we normalize based on per 1000 mailboxes and for this category of 1000 and under mailboxes it doesn’t make as much sense.
Next, we report on Database xfers/sec/disk drive in Figure 2
In Figure 2, the new InforTrend submission came in at number one (#1) with ~152 database transfers/sec/disk spindle. None of these top ten systems had more than 11 disk drives with all the Dell submissions (#2-4 & #7-9) having 11 spindles and all the rest (#5-6 & #10) having 8 spindles each.
There seems to be a step function improvement between fourth and fifth place in the above transfers/sec/spindle. The results were below 100 database transfers/sec/spindle for fifth place and below and then they were ~140 and above for fourth place and above. Can’t tell what’s different other than maybe more modern solutions but the Dell systems spanned both below ~100 and ~140 database transfers per second per spindle and they were the same exact systems just different mailbox counts. So maybe it’s not hardware but software or in Dell’s case drive busy-ness that matters here.
We’re always happy to see new submissions. We firmly believe that ESRP is the most comprehensive, real world measure of storage system performance that exists today, even if Microsoft will not call it a “benchmark”. Submissions at this low-end mailbox count category aren’t as sexy as the over 5K mailboxes but still provide useful information for SMB customers.
It’s also good to see disk-only submissions. The InforTrend EonStor DS 1016R supports a flash cache but none was configured in this submission. Flash would have provided a boost in performance but that may not be as useful in this more random workload. We look forward to seeing more disk-only submissions in the future.
